Biking & Cycle Routes
When it comes to biking in Abergavenny is surrounded by hundreds of quiet lanes most of which offer spectacular views of the rolling Welsh countryside.
A number of organisations that you can hire bikes from are listed lower on this page.
If you'd like to get away from the roads altogether it is possible to ride on parts of the Monmouth and Brecon canal towpath but this does require a free permit - further details from the British Waterways website. An alternative is to use the Sustrans cycle path that runs north and west from Llanfoist through Govilon and up to Brynmawr.
If you fancy a more challenging ride it is possible to link four of the castles in the area (White Castle, Skenfrith, Grosmont and Abergavenny). The route is described here. There are also a number of free downloadable road cycling route maps at www.bikebasewales.com
'Bike rides around West Gwent and the Borderlands' is a guide to both cycling and mountain bike rides (with route maps) that tie in with the many heritage sites around the Abergavenny and wider Gwent area - contact www.odynbooks.co.uk.
